Ann Arbor Fiberarts Guild.  African-American quilt stories from the
collector and viewing of his quilts and needlepoint rugs.  Social time

holiday creations including gifts, home decor, fashion accessories
(scarves, hats, gloves, jewelry), garments, yarn, fabric, handmade
paper, and wall pieces.  Demonstrations of felting, spinning,
tapestry, and weaving plus informal modeling:--10:00am - 4:00 pm.

Workshop and Runway Show with Maggie Jackson, Award Winning International Knitwear Designer     Presented by the Ann Arbor Fiberarts Guild,  October 12 - 14.

Sunday, October 13, 9am to 4pm  "Wearable Art" Workshop

Monday, October 14:  Fashion Show of Maggie Jackson's knitted garments and accessories follows the 7pm business meeting of the Ann Arbor Fiber Arts Guild.  Free to AAFG members. $10.00 donation by guests.

Workshop:  Washtenaw Community College 

In Saturday's workshop you will create a sampler piece of your own design using Maggie's signature stitches like rag knot, tubes, splits, and ladder stitch. The sampler piece can be turned into a scarf, purse or table runner.  Under Maggie's guidance you will learn finishing techniques and tips she learned from having 45 knitters in Ireland when she did Ready-to-Wear. 

Sunday's workshop will take you beyond the previous day with even more of Maggie's interesting textures, stitches and techniques. Ramping things up a notch, you will learn how to incorporate other materials to expand you creativity with two colored frilled tubes, bows, two colored picot tubes and much more. Maggie will help you broaden your horizon and create a whole new style of knitting. 

Registration fee for the weekend workshop (both days) is $170 for AAFG members and $210 for non members.  A materials fee of $40, payable to the instructor at the beginning of the workshop, covers all yarns for projects both days. You bring #7 or #8 bamboo, wood or plastic needles, a darning needle, scissors and a bag lunch. If you wish, you may share  this workshop with a friend, splitting the fees and the days. Fashion Show:  Zion Lutheran Church, 1501 West Liberty Street, Ann Arbor

Maggie Jackson will host a fashion show of her knitted garments and accessories on live models. Garments can be tried on and purchased after the show. Maggie will also have books of her designs available for purchase.  Refer to Maggie's website http://www.maggiknits.com for a sneak peek at the kinds of garments she has shown in Paris, London, New York and soon Ann Arbor. OCTOBER MEETING

Dear SDA Friends,

I hope you have all had a wonderful and productive summer. I am a bit late in scheduling our fall kick-off event, but here it is. Our meeting will be October 20th at 2p.m. Sandy Kunkle has generously offered again to host the meeting at her home. (1201 Minglewood Way, Ann Arbor, MI  48103 with telephone 734-997-9032).  The theme will again be our popular show and tell. We would like to hear and see how you spent your summer. Please bring your newest work as well as anything you may have done in a workshop. As usual we ask that you bring a snack to share and your favorite beverage. Sandy will provide coffee.

On another note, I will be stepping down as your SDA Michigan representative after our October meeting. I have enjoyed tremendously working with all of you. I would like to encourage each of you to seriously consider volunteering to take on the position of SDA Representative. It has been fun and rewarding. You will work with a group of dedicated artists, make lots of new friends and have the opportunity to represent a fabulous organization. I would be happy to work with a new rep for a time, so there is no such thing as, "I wouldn't know where to start". 

I also want to especially thank the SDA Michigan team for their dedication. They are Susan Trovillion, Jean Pratt, Lynn Krawczyk and Karin Larsen. Their support has been invaluable. Thank you all.

 The Third Coast Fiber Arts Festival is two wonderful days of fiber fun, education and a thriving marketplace. Held October 18 & 19 at the McGregor Center on the campus of Wayne State University, this year’s event will be even bigger and better than last year when hundreds of fiber lovers came to learn from some of the country’s best known and respected teachers and to buy high quality hand-crafted fiber products from dozens of vendors.

There is something for almost every fiber fan including knitting, crochet, weaving and more. The event was created for folk we like to call fiber fanatics. Last year, some folks travelled thousands of miles to take part. And, from what we hear, they enjoyed every minute of it!

This year’s festival will have one of the strongest cadre of teachers outside of national fiber events such as Stitches. The folks pictured at the right will be supplemented with several local and regional fiber instructors. (Click the link beneath a picture to learn more about each instructor.)

There will also be a large, indoor marketplace with vendors from across the country. The variety will be great and the quality will be top rate. (It's all above ground this year -- nothing on the garden level.)

Another thing that makes this event special is its venue. The McGregor Center, designed by famed architect Yamasaki, is a spacious marble and glass castle. Its abundant natural light makes the marketplace a wonderful spot to shop and admire regardless of the weather. If you wish to explore, Greektown and Windsor, Ontario are just minutes away. Both offer casinos, yummy food and great walking around.  Both sides of the Detroit River now boast world-class river walkways.

Lecture/demonstration by Valerie Allen - September 11

You may remember Valerie Allen came and did a Golden Artist Lecture for SDA-Michigan. Lecture/demonstration by Valerie Allen - September 11 On Wednesday, September 11 Valerie Allen, Golden Certified Working Artist and juror of the Grosse Pointe ART Center's most recent exhibition "Our Rivers, Our Lakes" will offer a lecture/demonstration.  The event is free and will be from 7:00-9:00 pm, but reservations are required as there is limited seating.  To register call the Grosse Pointe ART Center at 313-881-3454 or email atgpaa@grossepointeartcenter.org. Valerie Allen is a professional artist residing in Michigan. She and her husband, artist Armin Mersmann, live and work in their studio/home near Midland Center for the Arts and Dow Gardens.   She is on the faculty of the Alden B. Dow Museum of Science and Art and has taught art at several Midwest colleges including Delta College at University Center, Michigan and Northwood University in Midland, Michigan. Her class and workshop topics include "The Sky has Limits-Controlling the Chaos of Mixed Media" , "The Secret Garden-A Mixed Media approach to Landscape" and “Explore the Possibilities-Innovations in Acrylics”. She is also an associate in the International Working Artists Program sponsored by New York based Golden Artist Colors-Fine Art Acrylics.   Valerie has exhibited art nationally including the Chicago Biennial, New American Drawing Exhibition in Santa Fe, New Mexico and the 18th Annual National Collage Society Juried Exhibit at the Montserrat College of Art, Massachusetts. In August 2007, she was awarded the prestigious Special Award of Merit at the 47th Annual Greater Michigan Art Exhibition juried by Karl Umluaf, Artist in Residence at Baylor University, Texas. She was also included in the October 2007 exhibition “Heart Rate-The Artistic Pulse of Post-Industrial Michigan” at the Buckham Gallery in Flint, Michigan. Valerie's work was showcased in the Michigan Governor's Residence for 2009. She has participated in the 2009 and 2010 Artprize International Exhibit in Grand Rapids, Michigan. New Classes

Susie Krage's Detroit Studio presents two new classes:

Think It, Print It, 2 days   

True improvisational printing on fabric. 

Using a blank silk screen, fabric paint, 

pastels, charcoal and other water 

soluble media, build a complex surface. 

Print two colors at once to define a 

shape. This is a fun class with no 

previous experience need to achieve 

success. 

Two day class Sept. 25 & 26, 9:30-4:30.

Dyeing Basics

Three days of dyeing basics using cotton 

and MX fiber reactive dyes.. We will batch,

microwave, dye single & multiple colors & 

do gradations. If you have never dyed or 

want a refresher, this class is for you. 

You will learn all of the basics to move 

forward in your dye explorations.

Rayon Threads for Sale

Above are 24 cones of  rayon thread in a rainbow of colors. They are 100% rayon viscose and started as 5000 meters each. Some have been used, but not much, there are still thousands of meters on each cone. They were meant for machine embroidery but work equally well for quilting and other embellishment.  For sale at the huge discount of $125 for the lot. Shipping, if needed, is not included.
