SDA Michigan's meeting schedule has ended for the summer. However if you would like to get together for a pot-luck picnic and show and tell, please let me know and preferred day.  I'm participating in the Ann Arbor Craft Fair, so after well before or after the week of July 14, please. If there is enough interest, I will schedule something.

Meanwhile, I hope you all have a great summer. For those attending the SDA Conference, I hope you have a fabulous time and learn lots to share when we meet again in the fall.

Crooked Tree Arts Center 33rd Annual Juried Fine Arts Exhibition -

The 33rd Annual Juried Fine Arts Exhibition will be presented in the Ermy B. & Gordon B. Bonfield Gallery from September 21 through November 8. The juried exhibition represents artists from all over the state of Michigan. The exhibit opening, which will be on Saturday, September 21st, is open to members/guests and artists only. The show will be juried Ann Arbor artist, Mark Nielsen. Awards will be announced at the opening between the hours of 4-6 p.m. Artists can enter the exhibition online during the months of June and July.

"Masterclass" Workshop | Friday-Saturday, May 17-18 | 9:00am - 5:00pm This comprehensive two-day workshop teaches you how to photograph your artwork like a professional with either a traditional digital camera or the camera in an iPhone®, iPad®, or Android™ device and to prepare the images for professional use. The workshop covers both basic and advanced concepts, camera features, and how to light and photograph a variety of artwork, from paintings to sculpture, fabric, and jewelry. Gifts of Art is currently accepting art exhibit proposals for the August 2013 - August 2014 exhibit year.  Individual artists or arts organizations may apply.  As one of the first and most comprehensive arts in healthcare programs nationwide, Gifts of Art brings the world of art & music to the University of Michigan Health System.  Our nine galleries display over 50 exhibits a year.  They include 2-D and 3-D spaces that are viewed by approximately 10,000
people a day.  This makes our galleries some of the most widely visited indoor, non-museum exhibit spaces in the state.

Photography Bootcamp a GREAT Success!

Today was the Photography Bootcamp with Eric Law of "Shoot My Art". There were eight in attendance. Eric was brilliant, organized, focused and very informative. If you didn't attend, you really missed out!

We each learned to individually set our cameras for shooting art work and regular shots (yes, there is a difference.) Janice dropped and broke her camera last week and came with a completely new one. By the end of the day she was comfortable using it. Besides learning about those odd seeming settings in the camera menu, we learned about relatively inexpensive lighting equipment, how to place the lights for a variety of objects, how to emphasize texture when needed, how to deal with shadows, what settings to use and how and where to upload the photos to the computer. And that was just the morning.

Afternoon was just as packed. We reviewed how to use Photoshop Elements, particularly for photos for  exhibits. This included formatting, correcting, changing perspective, straightening, sharpening, resizing, cropping, changing dpi, size and pixels. Eric covered how to meet the requirements for entering various exhibits and the differences in settings for book or magazine submissions as well. We had a discussion about backgrounds and their colors and how they effect the final picture.

There was plenty of time to have everyone's questions answered, the discussions were complete and sometimes lively. I believe we all left feeling very happy we attended the workshop and that we certainly received a lot of very useful information! None of us became overnight experts, but watch out! With some practice,  you never know! If you didn't attend, you really missed out!
