You may remember Valerie Allen came and did a Golden Artist Lecture for SDA-Michigan.

On Wednesday, September 11 Valerie Allen, Golden Certified Working Artist and juror of the Grosse Pointe ART Center's most recent exhibition "Our Rivers, Our Lakes" will offer a lecture/demonstration.  The event is free and will be from 7:00-9:00 pm, but reservations are required as there is limited seating.  To register call the Grosse Pointe ART Center at

Valerie Allen is a professional artist residing in Michigan. She and her husband, artist Armin Mersmann, live and work in their studio/home near Midland Center for the Arts and Dow Gardens.
 
She is on the faculty of the Alden B. Dow Museum of Science and Art and has taught art at several Midwest colleges including Delta College at University Center, Michigan and Northwood University in Midland, Michigan. Her class and workshop topics include "The Sky has Limits-Controlling the Chaos of Mixed Media" , "The Secret Garden-A Mixed Media approach to Landscape" and “Explore the Possibilities-Innovations in Acrylics”. She is also an associate in the International Working Artists Program sponsored by New York based Golden Artist Colors-Fine Art Acrylics.
 
Valerie has exhibited art nationally including the Chicago Biennial, New American Drawing Exhibition in Santa Fe, New Mexico and the 18th Annual National Collage Society Juried Exhibit at the Montserrat College of Art, Massachusetts. In August 2007, she was awarded the prestigious Special Award of Merit at the 47th Annual Greater Michigan Art Exhibition juried by Karl Umluaf, Artist in Residence at Baylor University, Texas. She was also included in the October 2007 exhibition “Heart Rate-The Artistic Pulse of Post-Industrial Michigan” at the Buckham Gallery in Flint, Michigan. Valerie's work was showcased in the Michigan Governor's Residence for 2009. She has participated in the 2009 and 2010 Artprize International Exhibit in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Her painting, "Taiko" was curated into St. Cecilia Music Center for Artprize 2011.

New Classes

Susie Krage's Detroit Studio presents two new classes:





Think It, Print It, 2 days   


True improvisational printing on fabric. 
Using a blank silk screen, fabric paint, 
pastels, charcoal and other water 
soluble media, build a complex surface. 
Print two colors at once to define a 
shape. This is a fun class with no 
previous experience need to achieve 
success. 
Two day class Sept. 25 & 26, 9:30-4:30.  
$150 & supply fee of $20

Dyeing Basics


Three days of dyeing basics using cotton 
and MX fiber reactive dyes.. We will batch,
microwave, dye single & multiple colors & 
do gradations. If you have never dyed or 
want a refresher, this class is for you. 
You will learn all of the basics to move 
forward in your dye explorations.

Rayon Threads for Sale


Above are 24 cones of  rayon thread in a rainbow of colors. They are 100% rayon viscose and started as 5000 meters each. Some have been used, but not much, there are still thousands of meters on each cone. They were meant for machine embroidery but work equally well for quilting and other embellishment.  For sale at the huge discount of $125 for the lot. Shipping, if needed, is not included.

 SEBASTOPOL: Sebastopol Center for the Arts and Surface Design Association present Innovations in Fiber Art VI, an international juried exhibition of thought-provoking, unconventional and innovative fiber artworks expressed in a range of materials.
 
Jurors are Susan Taber Avila, artist and Professor of Design (Textiles and Fashion) at the University of California, Davis and  Chutian Scholar at Wuhan Textile University in Wuhan, China. She has exhibited work in Argentina, China, Costa Rica, Hong Kong, Lithuania, Mexico, Swaziland, and the UK as well as numerous exhibitions in the United States. Susan Taber Avila’s  artwork is included in several books and periodicals and she has published articles in FiberartsOrnament, and Surface Design Journal. She was the co-creator of the website, FiberScene.com (1999-2010) and she currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Surface Design Association.
 Joan Schulze, Independent artist and lecturer, whose work has been shown in numerous museums and galleries worldwide since the 1970s. She exhibits and teaches internationally and is highly regarded for her work in collage and the fiber arts. Reviewers have called her the female “Rauschenberg”.  Since 2000, Schulze has been juror, advisor and the 2012 jury chair for From Lausanne to Beijing, the International Fiber Art Biennale.  She participated in the 4th Riga International Textiles & Fibre Triennial in Latvia; in 2012 a solo show in Lisbon, Portugal. Her studio is in San Francisco, California.

Scarab Club Exhibition

Please celebrate with me! I just learned that two of my pieces from the "Letters" series were selected for the "Global Colors" exhibition at the Scarab Club. It will run from July 10 to Aug. 3, 2013. The artist reception is Friday, July 12, 6-9 p.m.The two pieces have not been exhibited before and are "Letter from Moscow" and "Letter from Bogota". The Scarab Club is located at 217 Farnsworth St., Detroit, 48202, behind the Detroit Institute of Art. If you have never been to the Scarab Club, it is an arts center in a nearly 100 year old building. The beams have been signed by many well known artists over the years.
