fabrics and fibers in book arts

team taught by Jean Buescher Bartlett www.bloodrootpress.com
and Susan Moran www.morantextiles.com

Jean Parsons Center, Traverse City, MI
9am to 4pm , Tuesday, July 30 through Monday, August 5, 2013

course description:

This workshop addresses “the whole book,” from contents to the unique fabrication of materials. We will focus on fabric resist dyeing and paperbacking techniques to make our own unique bookcloth and artists books. Students will incorporate their own imagery, materials, and techniques into book works that are experiential by folding, shaping, stitch resists, and making relief surfaces.!

class format:

We will be using two large classrooms at the Parsons Center, one for dyeing and paper backing, the other for binding and stitching (or one wet and one dry). Fiber artist Susan Moran will instruct students in Japanese resist dyeing techniques (shibori) and Jean Buescher Bartlett will teach bookbinding. Both instructors will facilitate with paper backing - to custom make our own bookcloth - as well as a wide variety of embroidery and handstitching techniques. Sue and Jean will alternate demonstrations and be available for one-on-one consultations during 9 to noon and 1 to 4 class time. The classroom building is open and available 24 hours, giving students plenty of time to work on their own at night.
