"Inherent State" exhibit

Inherent State is a unique exhibition that features the work of two sets of sisters, Brooks Harris Stevens and Jennifer Harris, and Sarah and Cathy Wagner. Each pair consists of one sister who is a fiber artist and one who is a creative writer. Their works are based on experiences rooted in their childhood, and share the connection between creative writing and visual art.  The Exhibition opens on Friday, February 10th when a reception will be held from 6:00 - 8:00 pm in the Ann Arbor Art Center’s Exhibitions Galleries.  In conjunction with the Exhibition, The Art Center will also be hosting a workshop entitled TEXTural Object, with fiber artists Brooks Harris Stevens and Sarah Wagner on Saturday, February 18, from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm.

Brooks Harris Stevens works incorporate objects, images and materials that evoke specific ideas or memories about events from a specific time period - the same time period that inspires Jennifer Harris’ short stories. Abstract works by Sarah Wagner focus on unnatural environments creating models for sisters' parallel worlds, incorporating Cathy Wagner’s exploration into the realm of experimental poetry.  Both sets of sisters work in individual manners that are truly affected by their inherent characteristics as siblings, yet they closely connect through their methodologies, imaginations and experiences. Just as there are similarities within the roots of all of the work there are all enticingly diverse.

TEXTural Object  Workshop
Saturday, February 18, 2012, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
Taught by exhibiting fiber artists Sarah Wagner and Brooks Harris Stevens this workshop will introduce students to basic three-dimensional fiber construction and surface embellishment using a variety of materials. With ideas stemming from their exhibition Inherent State, a discussion of the link between text and textile will serve as a starting point for art-making.
