Mystery Class

Hi All,

Recently I sent a request for feedback about how to use the monies we collected for use toward an exhibit. Of course, by now you know that isn't going to happen in the near future. Many of you felt the money should go toward a workshop, so that is what we will do.

Since only a small number of you have participated in previous workshops and contributed to the fund, you will be the ones first invited. I no longer have the lists of those who attended, so if you have done so where you were asked to pay an extra $5 toward the exhibit fund and want to take  the workshop, keep reading.

This will be a Mystery Workshop. It will be held in my studio in Detroit, Wednesday, September 10, 9:30-4 p.m. There will be a supply list and a supply fee of $15. The content of the workshop is a secret, so please don't ask about it. This is one of those things that requires stepping out in faith that it will be fun and informative.

If you meet the requirement of contributing to the fund AND you are interested in the workshop, please send me an e-mail ASAP. The size of the workshop must be limited due to available space. Acceptance will be on a first come first served basis.

                                                The Thick and Thin of Dye

The mx fiber reactive dyes are versatile and easy to use, but adding thickeners creates a whole new way to use them. Come play and experiment for a creative and exciting five days. This is a class packed with techniques such as hand painting, mono-printing, silk screening, multi-colored interfacing screening, improvisational work and more. Take the opportunity to experiment with a variety of fabrics. We will make many smaller pieces and some yardage.

Last Meeting

Last Sunday was the most recent meeting of SDA Michigan. There were four of us in attendance. Xia Gao came all of the way from Lansing to participate. We had a lovely visit, snacks and show and tell. We were all fascinated with Xia's latest work which was made from lutradur and cut with a cricut machine. She had two delicate lace like bowls, one dense black and the other white. Kay Lister had two toss pillows made from yardage she discharged on her driveway using the purchased thickened bleach as well as a very large and colorful snow dyed piece. Kay says the bleach left "crop circles" type marks on the drive!  Terrie Voight was wearing a silk and wool hand printed shrug in blues and purples. The fabric was very soft and draped beautifully. She also showed us a long jacket she made from black discharged cotton. I (Susie) showed two garments from the Ann Arbor Fiber Feast as well as an indigo dyed shibori sampler.

I had expected to discuss another offer from The Edsel Ford House Gallery for an exhibit in November. However, I learned that there had been a personnel change. I tracked down the new exhibitions coordinator and they have once again withdrawn the offer. They say there has been too great a turn-over in personnel to even consider an exhibit at this time. I do not intend to pursue this venue again.

Diane Nunez was unable to attend the meeting. I do hope that she will, as she hopes, be able to take up her responsibilities as your representative in the very near future. She has assured me that she intends to do so as soon as she is able. Please hang in there with her. If anyone would like to volunteer to help her get started by proposing a workshop or speaker, I am sure she would be happy to accept that sort of help.

Meanwhile, please keep in touch. I am still in the same place, same e-mail, and look forward to hearing from you. I will be teaching classes and trying to produce some new work. I would love to hear what you are doing and would also love to see more smiling faces on Michigan's section of the SDA website!

April 8 Morning Speaker – KATHIE BRIGGS - is an award winning artist exhibiting quilts in galleries, art centers and at national and international quilt shows; and has been featured at the Fiber Artists Coalition, Loose Threads, and in books and magazines. She is a member of, the Jordan River Arts Council, Crooked Tree Art Council, Charlevoix Circle of Arts, and a professional artist member of the Studio Art Quilt Associates.

Kathie is fascinated by the interplay of color, form and texture. Her realistic to abstract art quilts sometimes include tactile elements like beading and layering as well as dimensional components such as wired leaves. She enjoys combining her own hand-dyed and painted fabric with a wide variety of commercial fabrics. She will speak on “Dancing With Your Muse”.

April 8 Afternoon and April 9 Workshop - KATHIE BRIGGS – “Driven to Abstraction”

Kathie will provide lessons on creating the quilt as abstract art.  She will help attendees explore the continuum between realism and total abstraction with a series of exercises. Attendees will work quickly to create several small fabric and/or mixed media compositions.

May 13 Morning Speaker – JUDY PETROVICH – is a designer, seamstress, and fiber artist from Holly, Michigan. She aspires to create truly wearable art that's unique and elegant, but flattering to all, regardless of size.  She spent the majority of her working career in the technical illustration field of the automotive industry. Her precision drawing skills and appreciation for structure drove her to always look for that "extra something" to make her creations truly different. She found her unique niche when she used a newly designed dry felting machine called the FeltLOOM together with alpaca fiber to produce custom high quality non-woven fabric as yardage. She won the 2009 Adult division of the Michigan Make It With Wool Contest. Today she has expanded her line of custom designs to include blends of silks, wools, cottons and bamboo. The FeltLOOM sparks creativity and new ideas in her mind, and Judy loves to share the knowledge, as well as her passion for sewing, with others.

May 13 Afternoon and May 14 Workshop - KATHY JACOBI – “Fine Art Felting”

Kathy will lead workshop attendees in felting by machine and by hand, incorporating a variety of gorgeous wools, fibers, yarns, beads, and embroidery, and any other art related materials that will make their work individual and out-standing fiber art pieces.

Another great Annual Luncheon, Fashion Show, and Member Exhibit

Special Concert

This is an off-topic subject, but such a special event, I thought some of you would appreciate knowing about it.

The Community Chorus of Detroit will be presenting a grand concert:  Giuseppi Verdi's Requiem.  This is a tour de force in and of itself.  It will be sung with three choirs, 4 top notch soloists, and a large orchestra.  It will be performed only once:  at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament on Woodward Avenue, in Detroit, on Sunday, 18 May at 4:30 PM.

 What many do not know is that this Requiem was taught from a single score to dozens of Jews who were rounded up and taken to a camp called Terezin in what I believe was Czechoslovakia at the time.  It was not in Germany. The conductor was Jewish and he used this music to keep the hopes alive for the captives. The Nazis used it as a way of showing the Red Cross how humanely they treated the Jews. The Requiem was sung over a dozen times at the internment camp.  Many of the singers did not make it. Some survived, and some of those who did will be in attendance at this presentation.  [There may be other holocaust survivors present as well].

This concert is attracting lots of interest and we suspect it will be a sell-put performance.   Tickets are $35.00 each.

Quilting Arts T.V.

I'd like to share my latest news and hope you will tune in. I returned from Cleveland last night after taping an episode for Quilting Arts T.V. I did a demo of stitched shibori on a fabric that has the dye fixative (a secret formula) embedded into the threads. It works for all of the dyes and speeds the entire dyeing process. The episode will air in July. I have to tell you all what a marvelous experience it was.  Susan Brubaker Knapp just started as the new host. She is warm and engaging and does a great job. The entire crew made me feel welcome and comfortable and their calm and caring did a lot to calm the jitters!

QATV is carried by Public Television. Unfortunately the Detroit PBS station doesn't. If enough people let PBS Detroit (or maybe Michigan) know that they are interested, they may be willing to pick up the program.

Call for Entries

Forward this Call for Entry to an artist you know!

Entries for Fiber Fever, an exhibition highlighting the use of fiber arts as media and process toward artistic expression, are now being accepted at the Foundry Art Centre. Dyeing, stitching, surface design, weaving, embroidery, quilting, batik, felting, basketry, textile manipulation, soft sculpture and other mixed media artworks, two- or three-dimensional, utilizing fibers as their primary material will be considered for this exhibition. Traditional and contemporary techniques and materials are welcome, as well as any themes the artist explores through fiber arts. Works may be two- or three-dimensional and must be original artworks conceived of and made by the artist. Pieces may be mixed-media, but must be primarily fiber; no photography or videos will be exhibited.   Michigan-based artist and educator Mark Newport will jury the exhibition and award one $1000 Best In Show Award and three Group 3 Awards. All entries are due by Wednesday, June 25, 2014. Artists may submit up to three works for a non-refundable processing fee of $35. Foundry Art Centre members may submit up to three works for a non-refundable fee of $24.  The exhibition runs from August 8 – September 19, 2014 with an opening reception on Friday, August 8, 2014 from 6pm-8pm. Award winners will be announced at the opening reception. JUROR INFORMATION MARK NEWPORT is an artist & educator living in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Newport’s work has been exhibited in the U.S., Canada, and Europe, including solo exhibitions at The Chicago Cultural Center, and Laumeier Sculpture Park in St. Louis, MO. His work is included in the collections of The Whitney Museum of American Art; The Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum; The Detroit Institute of Arts, The Cranbrook Art Museum; The Arizona State University Art Museum, Microsoft, and Progressive Insurance. Newport’s work will be exhibited in the Duane Reed Gallery in St. Louis this April 2014. Newport is the Artist-in-Residence and Head of Fiber at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. Workshop and Call for Entry

In conjunction with the opening of her solo exhibit August 14, 2014, renowned quilt artist Nancy Crow will teach a five-day workshop at the Muskegon Museum of Art this summer.

Call for Entries: Extreme Fibers: Textile Icons and the New Edge

The Muskegon Museum of Art announces a call for entries for Extreme Fibers: Textile Icons and the New Edge, a two-part exhibition that will feature artwork from established and emerging textile artists from around the world. An illustrated publication, as the budget allows, will accompany the exhibition. The deadline for entries is November 14, 2014; the exhibit will be held Aug 20-Nov 1, 2015.

 

1. Part one of the exhibition is comprised of the artwork of some of the world’s top fiber artists, to include: Luis Acosta, Kyoung Ae Cho, Kate Anderson, Ewa Bartosz-Mazus, Lia Cook, Thomas Cronenberg, Nancy Crow, Patricia Hickman, Jan Hopkins, Wolfgang Horn, Ferne Jacobs, David Johnson, Gerhardt Knodel, Gyöngy Laky, Maximo Laura, Tom Lundberg, Libby Mijanovich, Laura Foster Nicholson, Krystyna Sadej, Arturo Alonzo Sandoval, Chizu Sekiguchi, Sherri Smith, Ixchel Suarez, Yoshiko Wada, Dawn Walden, Carole Weller, and Bhakti Ziek.
2. Part two of the exhibition will feature artwork selected by a 3-juror panel (Ferne Jacobs, Gyöngy Laky, Namita Gupta Wiggers). Entry in this section is open to artists, 18 years and older, from any country. 
3. Artists are invited to enter up to two works of fiber and textile based art for consideration. Entry is $50 for one or two artworks.

I spoke with our new rep, Diane Nunez today. Unfortunately she is not well and has not been able to work as our rep. She has been suffering from a chronic inner ear imbalance which has incapacitated her. She has tried a number of treatment modalities and continues to search for a solution. In the meantime, there are two things I would like to ask. Is there anyone who would be willing to help out in the meantime and how would you feel about a Sunday afternoon meeting at my home in April? I thought it might be a chance to reconnect, and have a show and tell as well as to make some important decisions about the future of our group.

I received this very sad e-mail from Anne Flora today. 

My husband John Ryan died unexpectedly this morning of heart failure.  I am so devastated -- John and I had 21 great years together.  There will be no funeral or visitation per his wishes.

I would  appreciate it if you could let the SDA members know.  He knew and enjoyed many of them!

Workshop:  Washtenaw Community College 

In Saturday's workshop you will create a sampler piece of your own design using Maggie's signature stitches like rag knot, tubes, splits, and ladder stitch. The sampler piece can be turned into a scarf, purse or table runner.  Under Maggie's guidance you will learn finishing techniques and tips she learned from having 45 knitters in Ireland when she did Ready-to-Wear. 

Sunday's workshop will take you beyond the previous day with even more of Maggie's interesting textures, stitches and techniques. Ramping things up a notch, you will learn how to incorporate other materials to expand you creativity with two colored frilled tubes, bows, two colored picot tubes and much more. Maggie will help you broaden your horizon and create a whole new style of knitting. 

Registration fee for the weekend workshop (both days) is $170 for AAFG members and $210 for non members.  A materials fee of $40, payable to the instructor at the beginning of the workshop, covers all yarns for projects both days. You bring #7 or #8 bamboo, wood or plastic needles, a darning needle, scissors and a bag lunch. If you wish, you may share  this workshop with a friend, splitting the fees and the days. Maggie Jackson will host a fashion show of her knitted garments and accessories on live models. Garments can be tried on and purchased after the show. Dear SDA Friends,

I hope you have all had a wonderful and productive summer. I am a bit late in scheduling our fall kick-off event, but here it is. Our meeting will be October 20th at 2p.m. Sandy Kunkle has generously offered again to host the meeting at her home. (1201 Minglewood Way, Ann Arbor, MI  48103 with telephone 734-997-9032).  The theme will again be our popular show and tell. We would like to hear and see how you spent your summer. Please bring your newest work as well as anything you may have done in a workshop. As usual we ask that you bring a snack to share and your favorite beverage. Sandy will provide coffee.

On another note, I will be stepping down as your SDA Michigan representative after our October meeting. I have enjoyed tremendously working with all of you. I would like to encourage each of you to seriously consider volunteering to take on the position of SDA Representative. It has been fun and rewarding. You will work with a group of dedicated artists, make lots of new friends and have the opportunity to represent a fabulous organization. I would be happy to work with a new rep for a time, so there is no such thing as, "I wouldn't know where to start". 

I also want to especially thank the SDA Michigan team for their dedication. They are Susan Trovillion, Jean Pratt, Lynn Krawczyk and Karin Larsen. Their support has been invaluable. Thank you all.

 The Third Coast Fiber Arts Festival is two wonderful days of fiber fun, education and a thriving marketplace. Held October 18 & 19 at the McGregor Center on the campus of Wayne State University, this year’s event will be even bigger and better than last year when hundreds of fiber lovers came to learn from some of the country’s best known and respected teachers and to buy high quality hand-crafted fiber products from dozens of vendors.

There is something for almost every fiber fan including knitting, crochet, weaving and more. The event was created for folk we like to call fiber fanatics. Last year, some folks travelled thousands of miles to take part. And, from what we hear, they enjoyed every minute of it!

This year’s festival will have one of the strongest cadre of teachers outside of national fiber events such as Stitches. The folks pictured at the right will be supplemented with several local and regional fiber instructors. (Click the link beneath a picture to learn more about each instructor.)

There will also be a large, indoor marketplace with vendors from across the country. The variety will be great and the quality will be top rate. (It's all above ground this year -- nothing on the garden level.)

Another thing that makes this event special is its venue. The McGregor Center, designed by famed architect Yamasaki, is a spacious marble and glass castle. Its abundant natural light makes the marketplace a wonderful spot to shop and admire regardless of the weather. If you wish to explore, Greektown and Windsor, Ontario are just minutes away. Both offer casinos, yummy food and great walking around.  Both sides of the Detroit River now boast world-class river walkways.

Lecture/demonstration by Valerie Allen - September 11

You may remember Valerie Allen came and did a Golden Artist Lecture for SDA-Michigan. Lecture/demonstration by Valerie Allen - September 11 On Wednesday, September 11 Valerie Allen, Golden Certified Working Artist and juror of the Grosse Pointe ART Center's most recent exhibition "Our Rivers, Our Lakes" will offer a lecture/demonstration.  The event is free and will be from 7:00-9:00 pm, but reservations are required as there is limited seating.  To register call the Grosse Pointe ART Center at 313-881-3454 or email atgpaa@grossepointeartcenter.org. Valerie Allen is a professional artist residing in Michigan. She and her husband, artist Armin Mersmann, live and work in their studio/home near Midland Center for the Arts and Dow Gardens.   She is on the faculty of the Alden B. Dow Museum of Science and Art and has taught art at several Midwest colleges including Delta College at University Center, Michigan and Northwood University in Midland, Michigan. Her class and workshop topics include "The Sky has Limits-Controlling the Chaos of Mixed Media" , "The Secret Garden-A Mixed Media approach to Landscape" and “Explore the Possibilities-Innovations in Acrylics”. She is also an associate in the International Working Artists Program sponsored by New York based Golden Artist Colors-Fine Art Acrylics.   Valerie has exhibited art nationally including the Chicago Biennial, New American Drawing Exhibition in Santa Fe, New Mexico and the 18th Annual National Collage Society Juried Exhibit at the Montserrat College of Art, Massachusetts. In August 2007, she was awarded the prestigious Special Award of Merit at the 47th Annual Greater Michigan Art Exhibition juried by Karl Umluaf, Artist in Residence at Baylor University, Texas. She was also included in the October 2007 exhibition “Heart Rate-The Artistic Pulse of Post-Industrial Michigan” at the Buckham Gallery in Flint, Michigan. Valerie's work was showcased in the Michigan Governor's Residence for 2009. She has participated in the 2009 and 2010 Artprize International Exhibit in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
